The Northern Alberta Institute of Technology is gearing up for a significant academic shake-up to align with industry needs and the future. Established in 1962, the polytechnic institute will expand from four schools to seven in a restructuring set to launch in July.
The reorganisation aims to strengthen connections between schools and key industries in Alberta, with a focus on creating pathways for students and enhancing collaboration with employers.
One of the new schools will spotlight construction and building sciences, responding to the strong demand in the economy. Additionally, information technology and digital media programs will take centre stage to meet industry demands for robust tech skills.
Micro-credentials will be a key focus, offering targeted courses to enhance skills for specific job requirements. NAIT plans to grow both its student body and staff as part of this initiative.
Looking ahead, NAIT envisions a reimagined campus by 2050, including the development of the Advanced Skills Centre. This proposed 640,000 square feet facility will house precincts for construction, advanced manufacturing, transportation and logistics, and energy, fostering interdisciplinary education.
The restructuring is part of NAIT's broader academic plan, and the institution is seeking government support for the Advanced Skills Centre. The province is carefully considering the proposal, with potential inclusion in Alberta's Budget 2024.
