We are thrilled to share that Edmonton has been acknowledged by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) as one of 119 cities across the globe demonstrating outstanding environmental leadership, overcoming the hurdles of a challenging global economic climate. Despite the commendation, Kent Snyder, Branch Manager for Planning and Environment Services, acknowledges the ongoing challenge of climate change mitigation, emphasizing the need for continuous efforts.
In pursuit of the city's commitment to becoming a net-zero emissions organization by 2040 and achieving a net-zero city by 2050, Edmonton reflects on this year's efforts, recognizing the imperative for sustained action. The CDP A-List criteria, including public disclosure through the CDP-ICLEI Track, city-wide emissions inventory, published climate action plan, climate risk assessment, and a climate adaptation goal, highlight the city's dedication to transparency and comprehensive environmental initiatives.
Out of 939 cities assessed by the CDP, just over 10% received an "A" rating this year, showcasing Edmonton's notable position in the global environmental landscape. The city's initiatives, such as the Clean Energy Improvement Program, green energy purchase targeting 100% renewable operations next year, and building retrofit programs for enhanced energy efficiency, underscore its commitment to reducing carbon output.
Moving forward, Edmonton places a key focus on encouraging reduced community emissions, recognizing the collective responsibility in addressing climate challenges. The city remains resolute in its pursuit of sustainable practices and environmental excellence.
