Edmonton International Airport plans to increase the number of drone operations

Edmonton International Airport's Director of E-commerce Cargo and Aviation Real Estate, Alex Lowe, shared insights from a recent summit in Brussels on the role of drones in cargo delivery. The airport aims to use drones for last-mile package delivery, contributing to sustainability goals by reducing vehicles, congestion, and pollution. Lowe highlighted advancements in battery technology, foreseeing a future with unmanned, electric-powered drones, and even hydrogen-powered ones in the long term. Currently operating drones within controlled airspace, the airport plans to expand drone capabilities, emphasizing safety and regulatory compliance. Lowe also discussed the airport's growth in cargo, plans for an International Cargo Hub, and a new service connecting Edmonton and Yellowknife. The airport's role in air cargo extends beyond its economic impact, benefiting the greater Edmonton metropolitan area and supporting various industries.
