Calgary and Edmonton have emerged as the dynamic cleantech hubs to watch in North America, as recognized by Startup Genome, a leading San Francisco-based policy advisory and research firm. The announcement was made this week at COP28 in Dubai.
Edmonton, praised for its high density of life science companies, has secured its position as a noteworthy player in the global cleantech arena. With strengths in AI, big data, and analytics, the city's ecosystem has experienced rapid growth over the past two years, outpacing its Prairie counterpart. Startup Genome specifically highlighted the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii) as a "world leader" in research, playing a pivotal role in the world's first national AI strategy, the Pan-Canadian AI Strategy. Meanwhile, Calgary has been acknowledged as a cleantech powerhouse, sharing the spotlight with five other cities in the 31st position globally.
As Alberta continues to make strides in the cleantech industry, these accolades underscore the province's commitment to sustainability and innovation. The global recognition at COP28 positions Edmonton and Calgary as key players in North America's cleantech revolution.
