Attention Tech Employers: Share Your Insights to Shape Future Training Programs | Jobs Economy and Trade Alberta

Jobs Economy and Trade (JET) under the Training and Employment Services (TES) branch is seeking input from employers in the technology sector. TES programs and services assist Albertans who are unemployed, underemployed, or on Employment Insurance (EI) to gain the skills and knowledge necessary to participate in the labor market and secure employment. Your feedback is crucial in informing future programs to ensure they lead to employment while avoiding duplication of existing initiatives.

  1. What are some job roles that are challenging to recruit for?

  2. What are the technical skill gaps most often cited in applicants?

  3. Are the tech positions requiring degree/diploma and do they require additional credentials?

    • How often are you hiring applicants that do not meet your minimum qualifications? What kind of skill gaps is the employer willing to train in house/fund vs not consider the applicant?

  4. What nontechnical skill gaps are most cited in applicants? 

    Examples of what we considering nontechnical can include:How often are you hiring applicants that do not meet your

    • communication skills, teamwork, leadership, time

      management, adaptability, problem-solving, critical thinking,

      work ethic, creativity, and emotional intelligence

  5. How do employers describe the ideal candidates in terms of soft skills, tech skills and what is the ideal training and certification.  What do employers feel is the ideal length of training or certification needed.

  6. Provide commentary on employer/industry knowledge of available programs and services to support upskilling Albertans and support employment.

  7. Is there a gap in training that the ministry might be able to support? Listed below are the potential program types we can use and links to our current technology focused programs.
