The Government of Alberta, in collaboration with Alberta Innovates and Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA), is proud to announce a significant investment of $57 million to drive innovation in the hydrogen sector. This funding, valued at $280 million, will support 28 projects aimed at advancing the hydrogen economy, reducing emissions, and fostering job creation in Alberta.
These projects span the entire hydrogen value chain, including production, storage, transmission, distribution, and utilization. Initiatives range from developing resilient pipelines for safe hydrogen distribution to creating hydrogen-fueled furnaces and water heaters. Successful applicants will have 24 to 36 months to complete their projects.
Both funding programs witnessed significant interest, with 95 expressions of interest received for the Hydrogen Centre of Excellence – Competition 2. After a rigorous review process involving 37 internal and external reviewers, 20 projects were selected for funding by Alberta Innovates’ Board of Trustees.
Similarly, ERA projects underwent a competitive review process overseen by a team of experts, ensuring transparency and fairness. Recipients will be accountable for reporting project outcomes, including greenhouse gas reductions, job creation, and other environmental, economic, and social benefits.
“Hydrogen has the potential to transform global energy markets and to create trillions of dollars of economic activity. Alberta’s government is committed to investing in new technologies to develop a hydrogen market and to ensure that Alberta is the Hydrogen capital of Canada. These investments will help to grow and diversify our economy and secure our future as a global energy powerhouse for generations to come.”
